Environmental Water Sampling Field Engineer

  • Conduct Environmental sampling of Groundwater, Surface water and Wastewater independently and in coordination with other Field Engineering Unit crew members.
  • Conduct sampling following rigorous and exacting sampling protocols; legibly fill out chain of custody and field sheets and other documentation accurately and consistently.
  • Safely drive to monitoring locations in a one-ton vehicle on and off road, and in all weather conditions.
  • Deliver samples and coolers to environmental lab, currently in central Seattle.
  • Lock and unlock gates and well casings, use hand tools safely,
  • Move 150+ pound tanks of compressed nitrogen tanks in and out of one-ton truck, carry, load and unload heavy coolers full of samples and ice, or 5 gallon buckets of ice, and hike uphill with backpack full of water samples (~35lbs), sometimes over steep, rough or marshy terrain.
  • Must be physically able to walk on uneven ground and be able to stoop, bend, lift and climb sufficiently to be able reach and open well casings, manhole covers, storm grates, etc.

    Operate and Maintain field monitoring equipment and tools including: Pneumatic pressure equipment, water level monitoring equipment, pH meters, conductivity meters, turbidity meters, dissolved oxygen meters, temperature probes, peristaltic pumps, dedicated groundwater monitoring pumps, flow-through field monitoring cells and gas monitoring equipment.
  • Use and maintain field computers and tablets used to record monitoring data, and environmental database programs.
  • Assessment and maintenance of all sampling locations (including groundwater wells, surface water stations and wastewater monitoring points).
  • Assist with the assessment of current well conditions and identification of maintenance needs. This will include supporting  staff to perform camera inspections of all groundwater wells to determine what modifications and improvements are needed, and whether maintenance can be performed in-house or using contractors.
  • Assist with performing in-house portion of maintenance and overseeing contractors to perform specified tasks.
  • Document new protocols and train appropriate staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, civil engineering, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry or closely related field, or an Associate of Science degree with 2 additional years of equivalent experience to a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing environmental engineering tasks, field data collection, and technical document development.
  • Demonstrated skills evaluating of engineering control systems or components.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing highly complex analysis of environmental systems which includes descriptive and prescriptive statistical analysis as well as evaluations involving: aquatic chemistry, geochemical, hydrogeologic, air toxics and environmental engineering.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint. Desirable to have experience with Earthsoft programs EDGE and EQuis.
  • Demonstrated data collection skills
  • Demonstrated general skills to troubleshoot and resolve environmental monitoring equipment malfunction.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a group
  • Skilled in prioritization and multitasking
  • Ability to work outdoor under various weather conditions.
