Environmental Water Sampling Field Engineer

JOB TASKS DESCRIPTION:
  • This person will assist an engineer collecting groundwater samples, surface water samples and wastewater samples primarily at Cedar Hills landfill in Maple Valley, but may include sampling elsewhere.
  • Expected to work Monday to Friday between 05:45 and 2:15 pm.
  • May be expected to drive the one-ton truck and camper sampling vehicle off road around the landfill, or on the highways and around downtown Seattle. They will not be working alone.
  • Will be under the close supervision of an Engineer I.
  • The primary duty will be to use a water level indicator to find and track static water levels in the aquifer before and during sampling.
  • They will also be helping the Engineer to figure out what pump settings produce the preferred flow rate at each groundwater well, by collecting timed aliquots of water. Setting up flow-through cell and tubing. Setting up tripod. Connecting the pressurized nitrogen hose to the well head. Unlocking steel well security lids.
  • Assisting the engineer with equipment calibration and maintenance. Decontaminating tubing and other field equipment.
  • Carrying 5 gallon buckets full of ice.
  • Carrying coolers full of samples and ice.
  • Helping with other sampling related activities.
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, civil engineering, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry or closely related field, or an Associate of Science degree with 2 additional years of equivalent experience to a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing environmental engineering tasks, field data collection, and technical document development.
  • Demonstrated skills evaluating of engineering control systems or components.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing highly complex analysis of environmental systems which includes descriptive and prescriptive statistical analysis as well as evaluations involving: aquatic chemistry, geochemical, hydrogeologic, air toxics and environmental engineering.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint. Desirable to have experience with Earthsoft programs EDGE and EQuis.
  • Demonstrated data collection skills
  • Demonstrated general skills to troubleshoot and resolve environmental monitoring equipment malfunction.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a group
  • Skilled in prioritization and multitasking
  • Ability to work outdoor under various weather conditions.

Rate: $29.87 per hour
